One of the common places students complain of feeling left out is on the playground. How many times have you had to answer the question, “No one will play with me” or “They won’t let me play” or “There isn’t anything to do.” A buddy bench may be able to answer some of those questions.

A buddy bench is a simple idea, it is a place on the playground where students can go when they feel left out. Other students then see a student is sitting on the buddy bench and ask them to play or join their group.

Obviously this will take some explanation, modeling, and support in order to work properly. Despite the work required, the idea of having a place where students can “pick each other up” is important; especially on the playground. Many schools incorporate this idea already, and have seen great success.

With the use of a buddy bench, recess won’t be a constant struggle of working with students to include everyone – they’ll be doing it on their own!

The Washington Post did a great story on this idea -

Here is a video with an article to see how the bench idea works at the Pennsylvania school where it originated-

The Buddy Bench IS:

  • A very special place that reminds you to be kind.
  • A place to sit and decide what looks interesting to you to play on the playground.
  • A place to include people in your play and make new friends.
  • A place to say "YES" to friends who ask you to play.
